Swanzey's Festival of Lights Is Small Enough That Your House Could Place

November 5, 2026

Last year, 23 properties signed up for the Swanzey Festival of Lights tour, according to Recreation Director Ashlee Crosby in The Keene Sentinel. The town names three winners. That works out to about one placing house for every eight on the map.

Registration for 2026 closes Sunday, November 29, which is the weekend after Thanksgiving. If your lights are already up, or will be by the time the turkey leftovers run out, you have a little over two weeks to put your house on the map.

A tour where every entry counts

Big-city light tours can list hundreds of homes. Swanzey's is about the size of a neighborhood walk, and so is Keene's. The same Sentinel story counted 22 properties on Keene's Light Up the City Tour, one fewer than Swanzey's.

With 23 stops, each house makes up roughly 4 percent of the tour. A family driving the whole map in an evening will slow down in front of every one. And because a community vote picks the winners, a well-placed porch on a street people already drive can do as well as a big yard display at the end of a long dirt road.

The Swanzey Recreation Department announces the three winning properties on Christmas Eve. According to the Sentinel, the best displays receive gift cards.

The 2026 calendar, from sign-up to Christmas Eve

These dates come from the Swanzey Recreation Department page, which also has the registration link.

Date What happens
Now through Sunday, November 29 Register your display online
Friday, December 4 Viewing opens across town
Saturday, December 5 A Very Swanzey Christmas at Whitcomb Hall, 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, December 12 Community voting opens
Wednesday, December 23 Voting closes
Thursday, December 24 Top three properties announced
Saturday, December 26 Viewing window ends

Viewing opens eight days before voting does, so the first week of December works like a preview. Voting then runs 12 days, covering the last weekend before Christmas and closing that Wednesday. A display that's lit by December 4 gets every weekend of the tour.

The town's summer newsletter listed a drive-thru kickoff at Swanzey Town Hall on Friday, December 4, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with tour maps, hot chocolate and candy canes handed out at the car window. Last year's kickoff ran the same 5:30 to 7 p.m. window at Town Hall, 620 Old Homestead Highway on Route 32. Swanzey Recreation posts updates on its Facebook page, the best place to check the December 4 details as the date gets closer.

Getting your house on the map

The Recreation Department lays out three ways to take part, and only the first one has a deadline.

  1. Register your property. Use the registration link on the Recreation Department page or scan the QR code on the town's flyer, and do it before Sunday, November 29. Registering puts your house on the tour map and makes it eligible for votes.
  2. Tour the lights. From December 4 through December 26, the map is your route.
  3. Cast your vote. Voting runs December 12 through December 23.

Last year, the department posted a digital copy of the map on its webpage the day the tour began. The online voting forms went live the following Friday. So the map showed up first, and the votes came in a week later from people who had already driven it.

That sequence gives you a practical reason to register early and light up on time. The first week of viewing is when people pick their route and their favorites. A house that goes dark until mid-December misses the window when its neighbors are deciding where to drive.

A registered house appears on the tour map as one of a couple dozen stops, which is what puts it in front of families planning a route.

December 5 gives the tour its first big night

The town's biggest holiday evening falls on the first Saturday of viewing. The 12th Annual A Very Swanzey Christmas runs Saturday, December 5, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Whitcomb Hall, 17 Main St.

The Recreation Department's posted schedule for the evening:

  • 4:00 p.m. Crafts, an outdoor bonfire and reindeer-food making
  • 4:30 p.m. A reading of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"
  • 5:00 p.m. Santa arrives on a Swanzey Fire Department truck for the annual tree lighting
  • Until 6:30 p.m. Photos with Santa

By the tree lighting at 5, it's fully dark. A family leaving Whitcomb Hall at 6:30 is already out, already bundled up, and one day into the viewing window. If you've registered, your lights will be on the map the same weekend the whole town gathers on Main Street.

Local businesses can get involved too. The Recreation Department is looking for sponsors for its holiday community events. It has a sponsor registration link on its page and takes questions at [email protected].

Fitting dinner into a lights night

A tour that takes most of an evening raises the question of where to eat. The Town of Swanzey business directory lists several places around town, so it's worth calling ahead for holiday-season hours:

  • Jeanne's Family Diner, 767 West Swanzey Road
  • Mama McDonough's Irish Pub, 80 Airport Road, North Swanzey
  • Maple Nut Kitchen, 33 Prospect St.
  • Papagallos, 9 Monadnock Highway, North Swanzey

For a thermos of coffee before a long loop, the directory also lists Dunkin' at 189 West Swanzey Road and at 47 Monadnock Highway in North Swanzey.

Two library evenings around the lights season

The Mount Caesar Union Library has a couple of dates that fall around the tour. Its posted calendar lists a free public movie night on Friday, November 20, at 6:30 p.m., with the title still to be announced. The library notes that its upstairs meeting room has no elevator, which matters for anyone planning to bring an older relative.

The library's book group lists a December 11 meeting on "Remarkably Bright Creatures." That Friday falls just as Festival of Lights voting gets underway, so it's an easy evening in town to pair with a drive past your neighbors' rooflines.

What last year's numbers suggest for this year

Swanzey's tour is in its seventh year, according to the town's summer newsletter, and it still drew a field in the low twenties last season. At that size, the decision of a few households changes the shape of the whole map. Five new entries on a single road could make it the obvious route for the month. One new house in a part of town with no entries adds a stop that wasn't there last year.

The town's own description of the event calls it a chance to "brighten up the town and help spread holiday cheer," whether by decorating a property or by driving through to see the displays. In a tour of about two dozen houses, the decorators set what the drivers get to see, and the sign-up form closes November 29.

At North New England Real Estate Group, we spend a lot of time on Swanzey's roads, and the lights map is one of our favorite reasons to drive them in December.
